There is a suprising amount of live music venues in Madrid with free shows every night of the week. Plus during the summer there are large events put on by the Council of the Arts as part of the Veranos de la Villa series including art exhibitions, theatrical performances and world music.

A listing of Jazz and Blues venues is here. Notable ones are El Junco(Jazz, Blues and Funk Jam sessions), La Coquette(Blues on Tuesday-Thursday) and Populart(expensive drinks but good music). All these places are free most nights to get in. With El Junco, sometimes you need to get there early before the music comes on, otherwise the cover is 10 Euro.
